ALOFI, Niue (June 2, 1998 - PACNEWS)---Niue's prison, once a vacant monument to the island nation's crime-free society, currently is almost full.

The small seven-cell jail overlooking the island's picturesque golf course now has six permanent residents. Until early last month, there also was a part-timer sentenced to weekend custody.

Crime patterns are changing on Niue, the Niue Economic Review reports. Crackdowns on drunk driver offenses have resulted in jail sentences for offenders, and police say they have been receiving more reports of sexual and other assaults.
