ALOFI, Niue (June 8, 1998 - PACNEWS/Ioane)---Niue's Legislative Assembly devoted the best part of a one-day sitting last week debating legislation pertaining to the control of pigs.

The animals are becoming a major problem for the island nation, particularly wild pigs that are destroying taro plots, Radio Sunshine reports.

The new legislation implements stiffer penalties for pig owners who let their animals wander. The government also has proposed providing pig traps in each village to help capture the destructive, wayward animals.
