TARAWA, Kiribati (June 9, 1998 - PACNEWS/Ioane)---The only active drama group in Kiribati, Te Itibwerere, faces a bleak future, now that it main sponsor, the British government, has notified the group of its decision to end financial support.

Britain has funded the group’s activities since July 1996.

Reports from the British Aid Management office in Tarawa say funding will be terminated beginning in August, but failed to elaborate, Radio Kiribati reports.

Spokesman for Te Itibwerere, Taaia Herman, says the group has made formal requests to the government and other potential donors for continued fiscal assistance.

Te Itibwerere, a non-profit organization, has produced public awareness dramas and workshops dealing with such matters as nutrition, hygiene, the environment and diarrhea in children.
