ALOFI, Niue (June 10, 1998 - PACNEWS/Ioane)---Niue’s tourism industry continues to face tough times.

Despite optimistic predictions by the Niue Tourism Office that this season will see visitor industry improvements, tourism development continues to struggle, Radio Sunshine reports.

Major properties on the island are laying off staff and restricting bar hours despite claims from tourism officials that their overseas promotion projects have been very successful. Some property owners say that in order to reduce growing overhead costs they may close down completely and not reopen again until next year.

Figures from the Niue Planning and Development Unit indicate that for the next four months, the peak Niue tourist season, the island can expect an average of just 11 visitors a week.
