From Bob Wernet, USS Missouri Memorial Association Aboard the Crowley "Sea Victory" Tugboat Sunday, June 14, 1998 6:00 a.m./ADT

LATITUDE = 28 degrees, 03 minutes North

LONGITUDE = 144 degrees, 00 minutes

LOCATION: Cape Kumukahi, the closest land point in Hawaii to our position, is 770 nautical miles to the southwest. To our east, Isla de Guadalupe, Mexico is 1,365 miles away.

To our west some 150 nautical miles is one of the few charted seamounts in this immediate vicinity, the Huddell Seamount, at 904 fathoms or 3,624 feet. Beyond it, to our northwest about 250 nautical miles, are the only two others: the Northern Holiday Seamount at 900 to 1,110 fathoms, and the Maher Seamount, 1,800 fathoms.

To our far southeast now is Tropical Storm Agatha. She is 1,554 nautical miles away, almost precisely the distance we have come from Astoria, Oregon in the past 10 and one-half days.

Agatha's appearance on the Sea Victory's National Weather Service fax transmission this morning marks the first visual indication we have seen of her presence on the vast weather tracking system for the complete Eastern Pacific Ocean. Earlier, regular written reports plotted her position, intensity and direction.

Sea Victory receives weather reports and forecasts every six hours, and among this morning's information was a forecast for the next five days indicating little or no change for our intended positions. Agatha's behavior 1,554 miles away, however, bears watching from afar.
