RIMPAC 98 DEFENSE EXERCISE TO BEGIN OFF HAWAII

CANBERRA, Australia (June 23, 1998 - PACNEWS)---A major defense exercise to begin off Hawaii next month will involve 50 ships, 200 aircraft and 25,000 servicemen and women from six Pacific Rim nations.

The nations taking part are the United States, Canada, Australia, Japan, Chile and South Korea.

The exercise, code named RIMPAC 98, is designed to improve cooperation at sea between the naval and air forces of the six nations, especially in the use of the latest high-tech weaponry.

The exercise will continue for a month, July 6-August 6.
