APIA, Samoa (June 29, 1998 - Radio Australia)---Police have arrested more than 20 people in connection with a riot earlier this month at a government-owned cattle farm.

The rioters set fire to buildings and other property, threatened police and fired guns before killing or stealing at least half the 1,000 cattle kept on the Samoa Trust Estate Corporation property west of Apia.

Police have been investigating the incident, and now have charged 20 people with various offenses, while others are being sought or questioned.

Those charged will appear in court this week.

Police have dismissed claims the incident arose from a long-running property dispute, as claimed by the villagers.
