SUVA, Fiji (July 1, 1998 - Radio Australia)---India says it soon will re-open its diplomatic post in Fiji, which has been closed since 1990.

A spokesperson for India's Ministry of External Affairs says the opening of a resident Indian High Commission in Suva will further consolidate bilateral links.

India was critical of the racially-weighted Constitution introduced in Fiji after the 1987 military coups, which it said discriminated against Fiji's large Indian community, and. broke off diplomatic ties with Suva in 1990.

The Fiji Constitution was amended last year, leading to a rebuilding of India-Fiji diplomatic relationships.
