PORT MORESBY, Papua New Guinea (July 6, 1998 - Radio Australia)---A fund initiated in Papua New Guinea over the weekend to help the children of Bougainville already has raised more than a quarter of a million Australian dollars.

Radio Australia correspondent Sean Dorney reports that the wife of Prime Minister Bill Skate is chairing the fund, which she says has been established to relieve the deprivation she saw while visiting the island with her husband:

"A framed photograph of Bill Skate and the two rebel leaders, Joseph Kabui and Sam Kauona, taken on the day the permanent cease-fire was signed two months ago fetched five thousand three hundred Kina or more than four thousand Australian dollars at an auction held in conjunction with the launching of the Bougainville Children's Fund.

"The largest donation of 100-thousand Kina came from the PNG National Gaming Board.

"Mrs. Skate promises the money raised will be spent on basics to help the children of Bougainville recover from the war -- on things such as school books and inoculations.
