TARAWA, Kiribati (July 6, 1998 - PACNEWS)---Seaweed farmers on Fanning Island in Kiribati's Northern Line Islands group have stopped harvesting activities because of an over supply of dried seaweed still awaiting shipment to the capital, Tarawa.

The farmers are particularly concerned because the Kiribati Atoll Seaweed Company still owes them over $AUS 17,000 ($US 10,000) for their last shipment, Radio Kiribati reports.

The farmers say the delay in being paid is causing serious financial problems.

Meantime, the company has assured the farmers that payment will be made later this month.

The company also says shipping currently is unavailable to and from the Line Islands and it does not know when the next ship will be able to visit the area.
