TO VANUATU IN 2001

HONIARA, Solomon Islands (July 12, 1998 - Radio Australia/PACNEWS)---The inaugural Melanesian Arts and Cultural Festival ended last week with organizers calling for it to become a regular event.

Officials say cultural links between their nations are the basis for further development of trade and political relationships.

The week-long festival brought together traditional artists and performers from Fiji, New Caledonia, Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu

Meantime, Vanuatu has been selected by this year's participants to host a second festival in 2001.

Valentine Wale, chairman of the Honiara festival, said the proposal will be submitted to the next Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG) meeting, to be held in Fiji later this month, for endorsement
