TONGAN GOVERNMENT CONCERNED ABOUT UNREGISTERED CHILDREN

NUKU'ALOFA, Tonga (July 20, 1998 - PACNEWS)---The Tongan government's registry office has expressed concern about the high number of unregistered children in the kingdom.

An office spokesperson said precise figures are not available but the problem is increasing, due to what the office considers parental carelessness, according to Radio Tonga.

Parents crowd the government registry office at the start of each school year, the spokesman noted, because children are prohibited from completing school enrollments because of failure to provide a birth certificates.
