TAVEUNI, Fiji Islands (July 29, 1998 - Radio Australia)---The Australian Government will provide $US 11 million to assist with the development of health services on the Fiji island of Taveuni.

The project's primary goals are to reduce the incidence and prevalence of diseases which contribute to high rates of illness and death.

The project includes the construction of a new hospital and the conversion of the existing hospital to a public health center

Taveuni, in north-eastern Fiji, is home to about 14,000 people, but the island has limited sanitation, water, power, and communications facilities.

Fiji's President, Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara told Parliament today, the project will be a major upgrade for the country's health services.
