APIA, Samoa (July 30, 1998 - Radio Australia)---France has sent an assessor to Samoa to investigate why an orthopedic unit donated by France is not being used.

The US$ 3 million facility was installed at the National Hospital in Apia six years ago, but has seen little specialist use.

Hospital staff say the unit is not appropriate to Samoa's medical conditions and medical personnel have not been properly trained to operate it.

The French Ambassador to Samoa, Jacques Le Blanc, says he is confident the problems will be solved and the unit can be brought on line within a short period of time.
