HAGATNA, Guam (August 2, 1998 - PIDP/CPIS/Hulsen)---Guam Governor Carl T. C. Gutierrez says the U.S. North Pacific territory will receive $US 465,000 in Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA) funds to help cover the cost of fires burning out of control during the El Niño drought earlier this year.

Gutierrez said the federal funds will pay for 70 percent of an estimated US$ 665,000 in damages caused by 243 separate fires.

The flames destroyed the contents of about 3,000 Guam acres between March 20 and April 9.
