VANUATU SENDS PEACEKEEPING CONTINGENT TO BOUGAINVILLE

PORT VILA, Vanuatu (August 3, 1998 - PACNEWS/Tuqiri)---Vanuatu's fourth contingent to the Peace Monitoring Mission on the Papua New Guinea island of Bougainville will replace a seven-member team currently performing peacekeeping duties.

Addressing the larger 15-member group before their departure, Vanuatu's Prime Minister Donald Kalpokas reminded the troops of their role as peace keepers for Bougainville and goodwill ambassadors for Vanuatu.

The group will first spend two weeks at New Zealand's Waioru Military Training Base before their deployment to Bougainville for three months' duty.

The ni-Vanuatu will work at four island stations in collaboration with soldiers and civilians from Australia, New Zealand and Fiji.
