PAGO PAGO, American Samoa (August 20, 1998 - Samoa News)---Beginning next January, 18 U.S. Seabees will be assigned to American Samoa for six months as part of a new "partnership" between the Tauese Administration and the U.S. Navy.

The Seabees assignment results from a request made by Governor Tauese Sunia to the U.S. Secretary of the Navy, John Dalton, last year to refurbish the cannons at Blunt and Breakers Point to their original authentic condition.

In addition, Tauese said, the Seabees will restore the original spot at which the United States Flag was raised 100 years ago, at Sogilau, behind the Samoa News buildings in the town area.

The more extensive part of the Seabees assignment includes repairing and restoring some of the original Naval buildings in town, such as Public Safety, Archives and the Hayden Museum, to their original condition.

The work is in preparation for celebrations marking the Territory's 100 years of association with the U.S., which will take place during April of the year 2000.
