SAIPAN, Northern Mariana Islands (August 21, 1998 CNMI News On-Line)--- The Marianas Visitors Authority (MVA) will launch a door-to-door campaign in Japan in September as its first major effort to attract more tourists to the Northern Marianas.

In an interview, MVA Chairman David M. Sablan said he was hoping that Governor Pedro P. Tenorio would join other members of the MVA board in paying courtesy visits to the top executives of travel agencies and groups in Japan, such as JALTA.

The Governor and MVA officials, together with representatives of the private sector in the CNMI, will be in Japan next month to launch the "Visit the Marianas '99" campaign.

MVA is supporting the private sector campaign with grants amounting to US$ 200,000.

Sablan said he and other CNMI representatives would appeal to the travel executives to send visitors to the Commonwealth.

The CNMI has suffered an over 30 percent decrease in visitor arrivals as a result of the economic slump in Asia.
