NEW CONSTRUCTION IN NEIAFU, VAVA'U, TONGA

NUKU'ALOFA, Tonga (August 20, 1998 - Tonga Chronicle)---Water supply and wharf upgrading, as well as construction of a market, got under way on Monday in Neiafu, Vava'u.

The T$ 2,794,850 ($US 1,624,535) water supply and wharf development contract signed last month covers construction of a main line from wells near Mataika, an additional reservoir in Neiafu, and rehabilitation of pipes and other works.

Wharf development will include a new customs and freight shed and passenger shelter, as well as wharf fenders and other improvements.

Also included will be repairs of the sea wall between the wharf and the Neiafu jetty, and a new jetty.

The T$ 806,371 ($US 468,711) market contract covers building, parking area, and access construction. Market construction also is expected to get under way this month, with Fletcher Royco Joint Venture as contractor.
