SUVA, Fiji Islands (August 29, 1998 - Daily Post/Pasifik Nius/Niuswire)---Adi Kuini Speed, once regarded as Fiji's Queen of Democracy, was elected yesterday as the woman to lead the Fijian Association party into next year's general elections, the Daily Post reports.

Her election came after the death of party founder Josefata Kamikamica and it is seen as a choice made to bring the party strong support both among Fijians and Indians.

Adi Kuini was the wife of Dr. Timoci Bavadra, whose coalition government was overthrown in 1987 in a military coup by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka when he was a lieutenant-colonel and the third highest ranking officer in the army.

By electing her as president of the party, the Fijian Association hopes to benefit from Adi Kuini's strong traditional links to her country's chiefly houses.

Her election is also likely to be embraced by the party's main coalition partner, Labour, of which Dr. Bavadra was the president.

Yesterday Labour said the vote for Adi Kuini was good for the coalition.
