APIA, Samoa (August 29, 1998 - PACNEWS)---Samoa's Minister of Agriculture, Solia Papu Va'ai, has described fires which ravaged more than a quarter of the drought stricken island of Savai'i -- the largest in the Samoas -- before being brought under control as a disaster.

He said plantations and farms were severely damaged but no casualties were reported.

Destroyed, he said, were some 6,000 hectares (14,820 acres) of kava plants and cocoa trees.

The blaze began a month ago when farmers began using fire to clear agricultural plots.
