SATELLITE EXPERTS TO HOLD OCTOBER PTC CONFERENCE IN FIJI ISLANDS

HONOLULU, Hawaii (September 1, 1998 - PIDP/CPIS/Amy)---Communication satellite representatives from six companies will discuss satellite service options for Pacific Island nations and territories during a conference and trade show October 21-23 in Suva, capital of the Fiji Islands.

The three day event, New Perspectives on Island Telecoms: Global Networks and Local Requirements, will include six primary communication representatives from Intelsat, Inmarsat, Loral Orion, Iridium, Intersputnik and JSat who will hold informational workshops. Karl Rossiter of Television New Zealand will chair a session with all companies participating.

Topics to be covered will include: Basics of Telecommunications, the Internet, Finance/Investment/Markets, Tele-Health, Telecom and Tourism.

The trade show will feature telecommunication products and services for use in the Pacific Islands.

The event is being organized jointly by the Pacific Islands Telecommunications Association (PITA) and the Pacific Telecommunications Council (PTC).

Notable international participants will hold discussions on various telecommunication topics. The Honorable Ratu Inoke Kubuabola, Fiji Islands' Minister of Communication, will speak on the Reform of the Telecommunications Sector in Fiji. The Vice Chancellor of the University of the South Pacific, Esekia Solofa, will discuss human resources issues and Keith Yoemans of the United Kingdom will consider the special telecom needs of small island states. Jean-Marie Beaufils of Alcatel Singapore will speak on Pacific underseas cable developments.

Together, Stuart Davies, CEO of Telecom Cook Islands, and Ismet Hamiti of the International Telecommunication Union will open the conference with a discussion of accounting as applied to Pacific Island states
