SUVA, Fiji (September 7, 1998 - Daily Post/Pasifik Nius/Niuswire)---Fiji Labour Party leader Mahendra Chaudhry yesterday welcomed the recent appointment of Adi Kuini Speed as leader of the Fijian Association Party (FAP), the Daily Post reports.

The Fiji Labour Party, FAP and the Party of National Unity have joined forces to contest next year's general elections.

His show of support comes in the wake of criticism by FAP party member Dr. Fereti Dewa, questioning Adi Kuini's election as party leader last week.

"I think we'll be able to work together very well," Mr. Chaudhry said yesterday.

"I welcome her appointment . She's an old colleague."

Meanwhile, the Fiji Labour Party said it was committed towards helping resolve the plight of farmers affected by drought in the Western Division.

That was the word from Mr. Chaudhry yesterday during a public meeting at the Khatriya Hall in Lautoka.

Heading Labour's move to help farmers affected by the drought is a plan to do away with the need to repay cash grants or financial assistance announced by the Sugar Cane Growers Fund board, which he said could be paid out by Friday.
