TONGA RECORDS SECOND QUARTER TRADE DEFICIT

NUKU'ALOFA, Tonga (September 11, 1998 - PACNEWS/Amy)---Tonga's foreign trade revenue fell by 23.7 million pa'anga ($US 14 million) during the second quarter of this year.

The loss results from a 7.1 percent increase in imports to 25.5 million pa'anga ($US 15 million).

Exports remained the same, at 1.8 million pa'anga ($US 1 million).

Tonga's main imports for the April-June quarter were mutton flaps, poultry pieces, corned beef, motor vehicles, building materials and telecommunication equipment. Major exports were fish, kava, paint and handicrafts.
