HONIARA, Solomon Islands (September 14, 1998 - PACNEWS/Amy)---The four-year-old National Shipping Service of Solomon Islands (NSS) has laid off 18 employees in an effort to save the company from closure.

General Manager Nelson Koroi said the lay-offs were necessary after three of the company's six inter-island vessel were sold to raise revenue.

Employees who worked on board the sold ships and several administrators at the company's headquarters lost their jobs, leaving NSS with a staff of about 40.

Koroi said NSS, which is owned by the Investment Corporation of Solomon Islands, now only operates the MV Baruku, Belama and Butai.
