CALL FOR OVERSEAS TONGANS TO HELP DROUGHT RELIEF EFFORT

NUKU‘ALOFA, Tonga (September 22, 1998 - Radio Australia)---Tonga's Director of Agriculture, Haniteli Fa'anunu, has appealed to Tongans living overseas -- particularly in Australia, Hawaii, New Zealand and the U.S. Mainland -- to assist with the kingdom’s drought relief effort.

Water shortages have caused crop failures in parts of Tonga, and people have been forced to rely more heavily on packaged and imported foods.

Mr. Fa'anunu says Tongans living in other countries should be aware of the situation at home, and give financial assistance to their families and friends in Tonga.

Tongans living abroad often remit part of their income to families at home, and Mr. Fa'anunu says an extra effort is needed now to help people purchase food.
