SUVA, Fiji Islands (September 25, 1998 - PACNEWS)---India has informed the Fiji Government of its choice for the post of High Commissioner (Ambassador) to Fiji.

He is career diplomat Bala Nand, who has previously represented India in Africa.

The Indian High Commission to Fiji was closed several years ago, when the Fiji Government of the day accused the then High Commissioner of interfering in Fijian politics.

The closure of the Suva office effectively ended direct diplomatic links between Fiji and India, which had been strained following the military coups of 1987.

A spokesperson for Fiji’s Department of Foreign Affairs said Fiji hopes Mr. Nand will take up the position as soon as possible.
