KIRIBATI RETURNS TO THE POLLS WEDNESDAY

TARAWA, Kiribati (September 29, 1998 - PACNEWS)---Kiribati voters return to the polls Wednesday to elect 27 representatives to the 42-seat Parliament.

Competing for the seats are 68 candidates who did not receive a 50 percent or more majority vote in last Wednesday's polling.

The first vote elected 15 candidates, 14 of whom --including President Teburoro Tito--currently serve in the Parliament.

Among those contesting Wednesday's election are the first two Presidents of Kiribati, Mr. Ieremia Tabai of Nonouti and Mr. Teatao Teannaki from Abaiang.

Forty-thousand I-Kiribati are registered to vote.
