PORT VILA, Vanuatu (September 24, 1998 - PACNEWS/Amy)---More than 100 former Vanuatu fishermen are demanding that the country's fishing company, Vanuatu Lumber Company, pay them allowances and severance pay entitlements allegedly owed by a predecessor company.

The fishermen recently staged a peaceful picket outside the company headquarters in Luganville on Espiritu Santo in an effort to obtain the payments.

The claims date back to 1992 when the fishing company was run by the South Pacific Fishing Company (SPFC). Vanuatu Lumber took over when SPFC was nearly bankrupt.
