SUVA, Fiji Islands (October 5, 1998 - PACNEWS/Amy)---A retired Australian eye surgeon says there is a lack of awareness in Fiji concerning the health dangers of diabetes.

Dr. Malcolm Tester said most Fijians are not aware that diabetes can also lead to total blindness and suggests the country create awareness campaigns to inform people of the effects and dangers of neglecting diabetes symptoms.

Dr. Tester is in Fiji to help set up a Retina Laser Unit which will care for diabetics whose sight has already been affected by the disease.
