PAGO PAGO, American Samoa (October 4, 1998 - PACNEWS/Amy)--- American Samoa's final FY 1999 budget totals $183,430,590 according to a communiqué delivered to the Legislative Branch by Governor Tauese Sunia.

Among the items the Governor cut from the budget passed by the legislature were a $2 million appropriation to pay back a government loan from the retirement fund and $1 million for the American Samoa Community College. Projected revenue of $3.8 million for the American Samoa Medical Center also was eliminated.

Lawmakers are seeking counsel's opinion on the legality of Sunia's line-item veto actions.

Speaker Mailo Sao Nua said an official legislative response to Gov. Sunia will not be issued until sometime later this week.
