HONIARA, Solomon Islands (October 9, 1998 - PACNEWS/Amy)---Solomon Islands Justice and Legal Affairs Minister Edmund Andresen highlighted the vulnerability facing small island states at the 53rd session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York last week.

Andresen said the threat is more evident as the Asian financial crisis continues to affect almost all of the world's economies.

He said the vulnerability of small island developing states to external economic shocks is real, and the tiny human and non-human resource base means a limited capacity to stabilize the domestic economy in the face of huge international economic forces.

Andresen stressed that carefully designed and monitored international standards and codes of conduct for financial flows and private financial management are essential.
