PNG PRIME MINISTER SKATE FIRES DEPUTY PRIME MINISTER NALI

PORT MORESBY, Papua New Guinea (October 14, 1998 - Radio Australia)--- Papua New Guinea's Prime Minister Bill Skate has sacked his Deputy Prime Minister, Michael Nali.

Radio Australia correspondent Sean Dorney reports that the shock dismissal will lead to a realignment in the Papua New Guinea government's political make-up:

"Just last month when Bill Skate was in New York to address the United Nations, Michael Nali was Papua New Guinea's Acting Prime Minister. Now he has been dumped from Bill Skate's coalition government.

"Neither Mr. Skate nor Mr. Nali have commented yet on the sacking, which took place this morning when the two men met in Mr. Skate's office in Parliament.

"Nali is the leader of that faction of Sir Julius Chan's People's Progress Party that has remained with Mr. Skate since he formed the current government after last year's elections.

"Sean Dorney, Port Moresby."
