PRESS STATEMENT October 13, 1998

FORUM SECRETARY GENERAL LEVI TO PALAU AND MARSHALL ISLANDS

The Secretary General of the South Pacific Forum Secretariat, Mr. Noel Levi, CBE, will be in Palau and the Republic of Marshall Islands this week as part of formal visits to Forum member countries since taking up his appointment earlier this year.

Mr. Levi will meet with the President of the Palau, HE Mr. Kuniwo Nakamura, and senior government officials for talks on Forum-related issues as well as Palau's hosting of the 30th South Pacific Forum meeting in Koror in 1999.

The Secretary General will later visit the Republic of Marshall Islands where he will meet with HE President Mr. Imata Kabua and senior government officials.

The visits will give the Secretary General and his delegation an opportunity to discuss the outcomes of the recent Forum meeting held in Palikir, Federated States of Micronesia last August.

This will include briefings for both governments on what the Forum Secretariat is doing to implement the decisions by Forum Leaders, discuss issues that require national attention and explain how the Secretariat can assist member states.

Similar briefings for other member states will be made over the next few months by the Secretariat, with separate briefing teams this week heading to Samoa and Australia.
