SUVA, Fiji Islands (October 18, 1998 - PACNEWS/Amy)--- Fiji compares well with other Pacific Island countries in life expectancy, mortality and family planning statistics.

According to a report of the government's achievements from 1992 to 1998, Fiji's mortality rates, as well as its life expectancy rates, are roughly at the same level as those in New Zealand and Australia.

The report indicates life expectancy is 72 years, 10 years longer than in 1993.

The death rate of 60 to 64-year-olds is second behind Australia for males and third behind Australia and New Zealand for females in the Pacific region.

Women in Fiji have increased the use of birth control and family planning to delay or prevent unwanted pregnancies, and now have an average of 2.9 children.
