YAREN, Nauru (October 23, 1998 - Radio Australia)---The Micronesian island nation of Nauru is celebrating the 66th anniversary of Angam Day, symbolizing the survival of the Nauruan race.

Angam Day stems back to the 1870s when the Nauru population suffered a massive decline during a decade of tribal warfare.

To mark the occasion, the Nauru Island Councilors have organized activities, including inter-house choral competitions and traditional food barbecues. Wrestling, tennis and fishing tournaments will fill the weekend celebration.
