STREETS" FOR MONEY

PAGO PAGO, American Samoa (October 29, 1998 - Samoa News)---"In 30 years American Samoans will be reduced to sweeping floors and sweeping the streets if we don't address the invasion of foreigners setting up businesses in American Samoa, the same businesses which are not paying their fair share of taxes and fees," predicts Congressman Eni Faleomavaega.

Admitting to Samoa News that his prediction and statement "is loaded with controversy," Faleomavaega pointed out that the issue concerning proliferation or the growth of businesses using American Samoans as fronts must be publicly addressed.

"There is no future for American Samoans in the long run if this place ends up being controlled by businesses run and owned by foreigners," he predicted. "American Samoans will end up sweeping the streets and floors for a living."

Faleomavaega said that local laws concerning business licenses must be overhauled, otherwise he predicts that American Samoa will be open to a "free-for-all" atmosphere where foreigners will exploit American Samoa.
