SPC Set To Report To Its Governing Body

SECRETARIAT OF THE PACIFIC COMMUNITY Nouméa, New Caledonia

PRESS RELEASE October 31, 1998

The 28th meeting of the Committee of Representatives of Governments and Administrations (CRGA) of the Pacific Community is due to open in Nouméa on Monday, November 2.

This session, which will end on the following Friday, will take place at the Headquarters of the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) at Anse Vata in Nouméa.

Meetings of the CRGA are usually the prelude to a South Pacific Conference, but this year's meeting has special significance in its own right. Now that the South Pacific Conference only takes place every second year, CRGA has been assigned new decision-making powers. In addition, this is the first CRGA since the former South Pacific Commission changed its name to become, last February, the Pacific Community (keeping the acronym "SPC").

On the agenda of this session, apart from administrative and budgetary matters, the 1999 budget in particular, the following items are worthy of note:

1. The readmission of the United Kingdom to the SPC;

2. Presentations by programme officers on their activities;

3. The adoption of a logo and a flag for the new Pacific Community.
