PORT VILA, Vanuatu (November 9, 1998 - PACNEWS)---The Vanuatu Fisheries Department reports it expects to receive the first shipment of baby green snails from Tonga this week, a move designed to revive the country's snail breeding operations.

Fisheries Department Director Moses Amos said the green snail breeding project began four years ago in Vanuatu, but a lack of breeding areas had slowed down full development of the venture.

New green snails farms will be developed along a reef near Anelghowat village, Aneityum Island, in Tafea province.

Vanuatu initially donated snails to Tonga in 1992, to start that country's green snail farming activities.
