SUVA, Fiji Islands (November 16 1998 - PACNEWS)---Fiji President Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara says he supports the return of the British monarch as Fiji's Head of State, indicating it will benefit indigenous Fijians.

The President spoke in support of the return of Queen Elizabeth II as Head of State while addressing last week's meeting of the Lau Provincial Council in Suva.

The President replaced the Queen as Head of State following the two military coups of 1987.

Ratu Sir Kamisese said the monarchy works in favor of Fijians because the Queen understands the lives of indigenous people and native land custody issues.
