HONOLULU, Hawai‘i (November 11, 1998 - PIDP/CPIS/Amy)---Coast Guard officials report that a 26-year-old man was airlifted from Kiritimati Island (Christmas Island), Kiribati after a diving accident there last week.

The diver, whose name was not released, was suffering from decompression sickness, causing chest pain and paralysis in the lower portion of his body.

The Coast Guard dispatched a C-130 airplane to Christmas Island Wednesday and transported the man to Hawai‘i.

An ambulance took him from Barber's Point Coast Guard Air Station to Kuakini Medical Center in Honolulu. His condition is unknown.
