HONIARA, Solomon Islands (November 18, 1998 - Radio Australia)---The Solomon Islands government has agreed to open to U.S. fishing vessels a portion of its territorial waters formerly closed to international fishing.

Fisheries Minister Dr. Steve Aumanu announced the move in Parliament while delivering a report on management of the country's tuna fisheries.

He said the decision follows negotiations in September between the government and a United States fisheries delegation.

A report by the Honiara-based Forum Fisheries Agency said that the Solomon Islands could benefit economically from the larger U.S. fishing vessel presence.
