PORT MORESBY, Papua New Guinea (November 18, 1998 - Post-Courier)---Increased illegal border crossings between Australia and Papua New Guinea along the Torres Strait is resulting in more illegal activities every year, according to Police Acting Deputy Commissioner of Operations Sam Inguba.

Mr. Inguba told the recent Australian/PNG crime and bilateral relationship conference that policing of the border was difficult because traditional visits allow Papua New Guineans and Australian residents to cross the border easily.

"This illegal activity, which stems from `sly grogging' to the sale and exchange of drugs and firearms, has seen the birth of a new era in the relationship between PNG and Australia on border issues. It is a bilateral partnership to combat cross border crime,'' he said.
