RARE MAORI WOOD CARVING FETCHES WORLD RECORD PRICE

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (November 23, 1998 - Radio Australia)---A rare Maori wood carving has been sold at auction in New York for more than AUS$ 1.72 million (US$ 1.08 million).

The 150 year old Pou Tokomanawa was sold to an anonymous buyer by phone, in what Sotheby's said was a world record price for a Maori carving.
