SUVA, Fiji Islands (November 27, 1998 - PACNEWS)---The President of the Fiji Trade Union Congress, Pratap Chand, has asked the government to increase scholarship quotas for next year to support students whose families have been severely affected by the on-going drought.

Chand said it is likely that parents of most students from drought-stricken areas will not be able to afford continuation of tertiary education.

He has urged lawmakers to give more scholarships to students from the Western and Northern divisions so they can successfully complete their studies.

Many sugar farmers and other laborers are struggling just to survive, he said, and paying tertiary-level fees for their children's education will be very difficult if not impossible.
