AUCKLAND, New Zealand (December 4, 1998 - PACNEWS)---Indigenous peoples from all over the world are expected to converge on the Chatham Islands to see the dawning of the new millennium and to renew an ancient Moriori covenant of peace.

The Te Twi Moriori Trust Board is organizing the event and has invited indigenous people from the Pacific, Asia, Africa and the Americas to take part.

The board has announced it would renew a 500-year old peace covenant in which Moriori people outlawed warfare and killing.

A special ceremony at first light on New Years Day 2000 will involve several indigenous groups.

(NOTE: The indigenous Moriori people survived until recent times in the Chatham Islands, east of New Zealand.)
