HONIARA, Solomon islands (December 10, 1998 - PACNEWS/SIBC)---The Solomon Islands government has prepared major lay-off packages for the first two permanent secretaries to lose their jobs as the size of the country's civil service is slashed.

The identity of the two permanent secretaries is not known yet but Solomon Islands Broadcasting Association News reports it understands benefits they will receive are worth about $27,000.

The redundancies are part of the government's policy and structural reform program, which will see more civil servants lose their jobs in the new year.
