YAREN, Nauru (December 11, 1998 - PACNEWS/NAURUTV)---Nauru has enacted a comprehensive new act covering local, resident expatriate and foreign fishing and boating activities.

The act requires the owners of locally-based small fishing boats to register their vessels, and have the correct safety equipment on board while at sea.

Owners of game fishing charter boats will be required to have prominent identification markings on their vessels.

The new act has comprehensive legislation covering the activities of foreign-registered commercial fishing vessels. To fish in Nauru waters, owners will now have to comply with the Regional Vessel Monitoring System maintained by the South Pacific Forum.

Other areas that come under the law include the regulation of fish aggregating devices, the importation of live fish, the selling of fish and the provision of information to the Nauru Fisheries and Marine Resources Authority.
