HONIARA, Solomon Islands (December 18, 1998 - PACNEWS/SIBC)---A Kuwait-based financial institution, the Kuwait Fund, has resumed financial support of a project designed to complete construction of a new, four-lane main road through the Solomon Islands capital, Honiara.

Approached by the government of former Prime Minister Solomon Mamaloni, the Kuwait Fund co-funded the first two phases of the project with the Solomon Islands government.

Stopped in 1993 by the short-lived government of Prime Minister Francis Billy Hilly, the project was not continued by the Solomon Mamaloni government the following year because the Kuwait Fund wanted outstanding payments cleared first.

New Zealand's McConell Dowell serves as contractor for the final phase of the project, to be complete in 18 months at a cost of US$ 10 million.
