NEW UNESCO OCEANOGRAPHIC COMMISSION OFFICE IN PERTH

PERTH, Australia (January 1, 1999 - Radio Australia)---The UNESCO Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission is set to open a regional office in the West Australian city of Perth, which is planned to become a major center for international oceanographic studies.

The office will coordinate sea safety observations, and will provide information to help predict and assess the impact of natural phenomena such as tsunamis and El Niño.

It will also collect data on marine resources and the health of the ocean and coastal waters.
